Starting Another New Linux Journey

Another distro hopping cycle has ended with me finding something I really like. Enter #! Crunchbang Linux. I got a new laptop around Christmas with Windows 7 installed and used that for a while but I knew eventually I would get Linux on there. The more I started using it the more I needed Linux and that’s where the journey began.

If you remember from previous posts I got Arch Linux running on my desktop about a year ago and it’s run well. For the laptop I wanted something different though. My criteria was that it had to be minimalistic, not KDE based, not Gnome based, and preferably use Apt for package management. Pacman in Arch is good but so many of the packages I was installing were in AUR that I didn’t want that for the laptop.

First, I tried a bunch of Live CD’s. Good thing my ISP doesn’t have caps as I burned through a lot of bandwidth. I found a few but nothing I really liked. Then it was Ubuntu Minimal install and build it up myself from there. This worked but it was more work then I wanted. Somehow along the way I read something about #! and I was intrigued from the minute I saw the website.

I immediately downloaded the latest stable version which at the time was 9.04. There is an alpha version available Statler Alpha1 but I wanted a stable system so that’s what I went with.

In the near future I’ll try to post again and give you my take on it.
