If you don’t know what Openbox is then you’re either not a Linux user or living under a rock somewhere. So for those that don’t know, Openbox is a Window Manager that does it’s job very well. I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for the various *box WM’s. My laptop is now running a new Linux distro that uses Openbox as the default window manager. Skip this part if you don’t care about personal info. A buddy of mine in university got me started on Linux many years ago. I don’t exactly remember what the first window manager was that I used, Gnome I believe, and it worked. Then one day this same buddy was showing me his system that had this totally weird WM on it without a menu, taskbar, statusbar. I loved the look of it and being curious had to find out what he was using. It ended up being Blackbox and the first thing I did was go home and install it.
After Blackbox I’ve tried Openbox and Fluxbox but ended up with Openbox being my favourite. I’ve used other WM’s and desktop environments over the years but usually end up coming back to Openbox and now finding a distro that uses it as the WM of choice it’s great. The folks over at #! have also done an excellent job of setting some very sane defaults in the config files and have given it a great look. If you’ve never looked into it before, please go check out #! Crunchbang Linux.
