In recent weeks I’ve been contemplating on learning how to type with a Dvorak keyboard. I’ve spent sometime reading different websites for and against the Dvorak keyboard. Being somewhat of a cynic and knowing how easy it is to post something online I’m having a difficult time deciding which way to go.
One of the better articles I’ve read on this is an article by Matt Mullenweg, creator of Wordpress, that he posted way back in 2003 on his blog at ma.tt.
My reasons for looking at changing is that after an hour or so of being at the computer I start getting some pain in my wrists and arms and supposedly a Dvorak keyboard is supposed to help with this. Some people also claim to have quite a speed increase when using the Dvorak keyboard. I’m not overly concerned with a speed increase my only issue is that when I’m typing at 100+ WPM my accuracy drops down to around 80% which isn’t very good.
I’ll have to decide in the next little bit and figure out if I want to take the time to re-learn how to touch type. Since I use the ViM text editor for a lot of things I would have to also decide what to do there. A prime example there is that when you want to move around the text you use the h, j, k, l keys. Either I could map these keys to whatever keys would be in that position on the Dvorak keyboard or I could retrain the muscle memory to figure out where those keys are on the Dvorak keyboard. I think I’ll have to put some more thought into this decision.
