Long Time, No Post

Well it’s been a few months since I’ve posted anything at all on this blog. I’ve been extremely busy with work in the last few months and have been doing some work on my own. As of 3 months ago I’ve never developed anything with Java before. After doing a project at work that required me to use Java I’ve actually gained some experience with it and am beginning to enjoy working with it.
My plan for the blog is going to change over the next little while. I have been doing very little PHP work lately and am embarking on a new path with Java so I’m going to be focusing on Java for a while. So stay tuned, in the next few days I’m going to discuss an application I’ve wanted to write for the last few years and have never gotten around to. This is going to be a fairly large and complex project that is going to require quite some time to accomplish as I seem to never have enough spare time.
The application is going to be designed with a modular architecture and I plan on releasing the core as open source and then extensions will be commercial if I ever get it that far.
In the next few posts I’ll post some information on my experiences with Java and the Eclipse IDE. I’m also going to go into the design of my application a bit.

XMonad Window Manager Configured

A few months ago if you read the post I got tired of Ubuntu Linux for various reasons and installed Arch Linux. That was one of the better decisions I’ve made. One of the biggest problems I had with Ubuntu was that it’s memory footprint was huge. There were lots of daemons and extra stuff running in the background that were unnecessary. At the same time I also was looking for a different window manager. This is where XMonad enters the picture. After a few months of use I must say that I really enjoy using it. I’ve finally got it somewhat configured to my liking, but it will be a while before I’ve tuned and tweaked it to what I want.

Zend Framework Tutorials On Hold

Since I haven’t posted anything in like two months it’s about time I post something. I’ve been extremely busy as of late and haven’t had time for much of anything. So my blog as usual is the first thing that suffers. I’ve decided to put the Zend Framework Tutorial on hold for a bit as currently I’m working on a couple of projects that are not using PHP and I’m trying to reacquaint myself with an old language I haven’t used in years and learning a new one.

Getting There

Well, after a day of playing I’m starting to get something resembling a decent system again. I think I’m trying to do too much in one weekend though. Instead of just instaling a new distro I’m also learning how to use a new window manager.

Shiny New Arch Linux Install

Well, I’ve got Arch Linux installed. Got it conifgured and installed XWindow server. Now it’s time to install the software that I need. This could take some time as there is almost nothing installed with the base Arch install. All you get is the basic GNU Tool chain required to run a system.
